The Great Leap Across the Ocean

Source: Valmiki Ramayana, Sundara Kanda, Chapter 1

At the southern tip of Bharata, where the land meets the endless ocean, the monkey army stood paralyzed. Before them stretched a hundred *yojanas* of churning waters - a distance so vast that even the mightiest warriors despaired. Somewhere across this impossible expanse lay Lanka, where Sita waited in captivity.

Jambavan, the ancient bear king, surveyed the assembled heroes. Each possessed remarkable abilities, yet none could cross such a distance. Then his wise eyes fell upon Hanuman, who sat quietly at the edge of the group, lost in meditation upon his Lord's suffering.

"Hanuman," Jambavan called softly, "do you remember who you are?"

As the elder spoke, recounting Hanuman's divine birth, his cosmic leaps as an infant, the blessings of all the gods, something awakened within the devoted servant. His body began to expand, his chest swelling with remembered power, his eyes blazing with renewed purpose.

"I remember," Hanuman whispered, then louder: "I remember!"

He grew to mountainous proportions, his shadow falling across the entire army. Standing atop Mount Mahendra, he pressed his feet deep into the rock, leaving eternal impressions. The mountain itself groaned under the pressure as he prepared to launch himself across the ocean.

"For Rama's sake, I will cross these waters," he declared, his voice echoing like thunder. "If there is no path, I shall become the path."

With a roar that shook the heavens, Hanuman launched himself into the sky. His leap was so powerful that trees were uprooted behind him, and the ocean itself recoiled at his passing. As he soared through the clouds, his form streaming like a comet, the very laws of nature seemed suspended.

Midway across the ocean, the sea goddess Surasa rose to test him, opening her mouth wide enough to swallow mountains. But Hanuman, in his wisdom, expanded his body to cosmic proportions, forcing her to open wider and wider, then suddenly contracted to the size of a thumb, flew through her mouth and out again, honoring her while continuing his mission.

When he finally landed on Lanka's golden shores, the entire island trembled. The demon guards looked up in terror at this mountain of devotion that had crossed the impossible ocean through sheer love for his Lord.
