Bringing the Sanjeevani Mountain

Source: Valmiki Ramayana, Yuddha Kanda, Chapter 74

The battlefield fell silent except for the sound of weeping. Lakshmana lay motionless, struck down by Indrajit's serpent arrow, his body growing cold as the poison coursed through his veins. Rama knelt beside his brother, and for the first time in the war, the incarnation of Vishnu appeared truly human in his grief.

"Without Lakshmana, victory means nothing," Rama whispered, his voice breaking. "Without my brother, I cannot return to Ayodhya."

Sushena, the monkey physician, examined the wound carefully. "There is one hope," he announced. "On the slopes of Mount Dronagiri in the Himalayas grows the Sanjeevani herb. It glows with its own light and can revive even the dead. But it must be brought before sunrise, or the prince will be lost forever."

The monkey army looked toward the north in despair. The Himalayas lay thousands of miles away, and dawn was only hours distant. Even for the swiftest among them, the journey seemed impossible.

Hanuman stepped forward, his eyes blazing with determination. "I will bring it," he said simply.

Without another word, he expanded his form to cosmic proportions and launched himself into the night sky. His flight was so swift that he passed through clouds like an arrow, leaving trails of fire in his wake. Mountains blurred beneath him as he covered distances that would take armies months to traverse.

But when he reached Dronagiri, a terrible realization struck him. The entire mountainside was covered with glowing herbs - thousands upon thousands of luminous plants, and he had no way to identify which was the true Sanjeevani. Precious minutes ticked away as he searched frantically.

Then, in a moment of divine inspiration born of complete devotion, Hanuman made a decision that shook the earth itself. If he could not identify the right herb, he would take them all. Wrapping his mighty arms around the entire peak of Dronagiri, he uprooted the mountain itself.

Flying back toward Lanka with a mountain balanced on his palm, Hanuman became a sight that stopped both gods and demons in wonder. The Sanjeevani herbs blazed like stars against the night sky, turning his massive form into a constellation of hope.

As he landed on the battlefield just as the first rays of dawn touched the horizon, Sushena quickly identified the correct herb and administered it to Lakshmana. The prince's eyes fluttered open, and his first sight was of Hanuman, still holding an entire mountain, silhouetted against the rising sun like a promise that no obstacle is insurmountable when love guides the way.
